Abstract
Master Haean Bongsu (海眼鳳秀, 1901-1974) was not only a distinguished Seon master in 20th-century Korean Buddhist history but also an actively engaged ordained practitioner who devoted himself to Buddhist reform and educational movements during the Japanese colonial period. This study intensively examines his youth activities in the 1920s, which have not received adequate attention, on the occasion of the 124th anniversary of his birth and the 51st anniversary of his nirvana. In particular, it empirically reconstructs his study abroad experience in Beijing from 1923 to 1924 and the Buddhist reform and educational movements he undertook after returning home, utilizing primary sources such as newspaper articles and Japanese authorities' reports. Master Haean possessed an integrated academic background, studying traditional Buddhist doctrine at Baekyang Temple's seminary, modern Buddhist studies at the Central Buddhist Seminary, and new learning at Peking University. In the early 1920s, he actively participated in the youth Buddhist movement as a literary department officer of the Baekyang branch of the Joseon Buddhist Youth Association and a member of the national lecture tour. During his study at Peking University in 1923, he participated in the activities of the Beijing Buddhist Students Association and engaged in ideological, academic, and literary activities by contributing to the publication of the journal Hwangya (荒野). Immediately after returning home in 1924, he established Sinmyeong Night School at Jajangam of Naeso Temple to launch a literacy campaign. By 1927, he had developed it into Haeseong Academy, operating three classes and educating about 40 male and female students. This was a pioneering case of Buddhist popular education. In 1925, he participated in Cheoluhoe (鐵牛會), formed for Buddhist reform, and gave a lecture on "The Suffering of Koreans in This Era" at a lecture meeting at Seonun Temple, stating "Let us awaken to the suffering we endure and advance toward paradise," thereby linking national consciousness with Buddhist reform. He also participated in the Tenant Farmers' Friendship Association to advocate for tenant farmers' rights. After the 1930s, his activities shifted from social movements to a focus on practice and propagation. His later activities—serving as abbot of Naeso Temple in 1927, working as a traveling dharma teacher in 1935, opening Seorae Seon Forest in 1945, and founding the Buddhist Jeondeung Association in 1969—represented efforts to maintain Buddhism's essence and connection with the people under temporal constraints. Master Haean's life demonstrates that engaged Buddhism and practice-oriented Buddhism are not opposites but can achieve harmony, revealing the significance of his unique academic career integrating traditional Buddhist studies, modern education, and overseas study, as well as his practical endeavors in modern Korean Buddhist history.
