해안 봉수(海眼鳳秀, 1901-1974)는 전북 부안 내소사 출신의 대선사로서 한글 불교시집 <시심시불>과 어록 <해안집>을 남긴 고승이다. 당시 불교계의 풍토를 보면 대부분의 고승이 석가탄신일 등 기념일에 한문 게송을 쓴 경우는 많았지만, 한글시를 통해 신심을 고양하고 불교의 가르침을 표현하는 경우는 거의 없었다. 시인, 문필가로 유명세를 얻은 몇몇 승려작가가 있었지만, 1960년대 승려작가로 한시 외에 한글시를 지어 시집을 펴낸 이는 해안이 유일하지 않았는가 생각한다. 이런 의미를 지닌 해안에 대해 그동안 학계에서는 거의 관심을 두지 않았다. 다만 내소사와 서울 전등사의 문도들에 의해 어록과 관련 자료집이 편찬되어 그의 생애와 사상을 파악하는 것은 그다지 어렵지 않다. 본고는 해안의 생애를 기존 연보에 따라 정리하고 보완하였다. 특히 백양사 광성강숙을 졸업하고 불교중앙학림을 거쳐 북경대학에 유학했다는 기술에 따라 그 연도를 비정하는 한편, 그 실제 여부를 집중 고찰하였다. 그 결과 광성강숙의 실태와 수료 현황을 정확히 파악할 수 있었다. 그리고 중앙학림과 북경 유학의 이력은 증명할 수 있는 수료증, 졸업증은 없지만, 언론 보도에 담긴 해안의 활동기록을 발굴하여 연보를 보완할 수 있었다. 해안의 법맥과 문학 창작의 성과에 대해서는 본고에서는 다루지 않고 앞으로의 과제로 남겨두었다.
Abstract
Haean-Bongsu is a great Buddhist monk from Naeso Temple in Buan, Jeollabuk-do, and is a high priest who left a collection of Korean Buddhist poems, "Sissim Sibul" and "Coastal House". In terms of the climate of the Buddhist community at that time, most high monks wrote Chinese poems on anniversaries such as Sakyamuni's Birthday, but rarely elevated their faith and expressed Buddhist teachings through Korean poetry. Although there were several monk writers who gained fame as poets and literary writers in the 1960s, I think Haean was the only monk who wrote and published poetry in addition to Chinese poetry. Until now, academia has paid little attention to the coast with this meaning. However, it is not very difficult to grasp his life and thoughts because quotes and related data collections have been compiled by Naesosa and Mundo of Jeondeungsa Temple in Seoul. This paper summarized and supplemented the life of the coast according to the existing annals. In particular, the year was judged according to the description that he graduated from Baekyangsa Temple's Gwangseonggangsuk and studied at Peking University through the Buddhist Central Academy, while intensively considering whether it was true. As a result, it was possible to accurately grasp the actual status and completion status of Gwangseonggangsuk. In addition, although there is no certificate or diploma that can prove the history of studying in Central Academy and Beijing, the annual report could be supplemented by discovering the records of coastal activities contained in media reports. The legal context of the coast and the achievements of literary creation were not covered in this paper, but were left as future tasks.
