19세기말 프랑스 제3공화정은 드레퓌스 사건이라는 가장 큰 위기를 맞게 되었다. 이를 계기로 시작된 지식인의 현실참여는 세기의 전환기와 함께 진실과 정의를 지키기 위한 새로운 패러다임을 제시했다. 하지만 예술가 계열의 지식인 활동은 그동안 역사적인 주목을 받지 못했다. 더불어 당대 새롭게 등장한 매체인 영화 역시 예외는 아니었다. 이에 본고는 그동안 역사적으로 조명되지 못했던 영화감독 조르주 멜리에스와 그의 작품 <드레퓌스 사건>을 중심으로 현실참여에 대한 논의를 확장하고자 한다. 멜리에스는 초기 영화에 있어서 ‘환상영화’의 창시자로 잘 알려져 있었지만 불랑제주의 광풍이 몰아치던 시기부터 시사만평가로 활동하며 부조리한 세태를 비판하고 있었다. 영화감독으로서 연출한 <드레퓌스 사건>은 정치적인 이유로 검열된 최초의 영화로 영화사에 기록되기도 했다. 그는 드레퓌스 사건의 초기부터 재심선고에 이르기까지 주요 일화를 영화적으로 재현한 ‘재구성된 뉴스릴’을 통해서 관객들에게 드레퓌스의 결백을 보여주고자 했다. 이후에도 멜리에스는 꾸준하게 식민주의와 제국주의, 민족주의에 대한 경계의 메시지를 담은 영화를 만들어 왔다. 특히 멜리에스 스스로가 가장 자랑스럽게 생각하는 <문명의 역사>는 필름이 소실되었지만 남은 기록을 통해 유럽의 세태를 비판하는 내용을 담고 있었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 그는 당시 자본에 잠식되어 산업화되어가는 영화계 속에서 독립 제작자로서 신념을 굽히지 않았고 최후의 작품 중 하나인 <북극의 정복>에서도 비판의 날을 세웠다. 이와 같이 멜리에스는 서구 열강에 대하여 자성의 목소리를 높인 드문 인물이었고 그의 현실참여는 영화 속에 깃들어 있었다. 따라서 영화적 현실참여의 역사는 멜리에스로부터 이미 시작되고 있었다.
Abstract
At the end of the 19th century, France faced a crisis that divided the whole country due to the punishment of an innocent military officer, Alfred Dreyfus (Dreyfus Affair). Nevertheless, thanks to the appearance of the intellectual and their advocacy for truth and justice, the scandal could be corrected. The history of the Intellectual during the French Third Republic, however, has been written based on writers, focusing on figures like Émile Zola, which overlooks the contributions of the other participants, as artists. It similarly omits the then-newly invented medium, film. In this respect, the paper mainly deals with works Georges Méliès for supplementing the engagement of the artist during the early phase of the French Third Republic. The time when Méliès started his career, visual representations had been on its transition to film. Thus, the newly invented film had been in the process of finding its identity, and Méliès was recognized as the inventor of “Fantasy Film” in early film history. However, as a caricaturist, he criticized Boulangerisme. Then later he became a film director, his engagement was shown in the film Dreyfus Affair (L’Affaire Dreyfus), which is notorious for being politically censored for the first time in film history. To support Dreyfus’ innocence, Méliès decided to show the audience a “Reconstructed Newsreel” of the Dreyfus Affair. Afterwards, he continued to make such films expressing criticism of colonialism, imperialism, and nationalism. Méliès’s proudest film was Humanity through the Ages (La Civilization à travers les Âges) which is lost; however, according to remaining accounts, it was also satire of European societies. Méliès struggled being an independent producer in the capitalizing film industry. Even at the end of his film career, he produced The Conquest of the Pole (À la Conquête du Pôle), showing his wit and criticism.
