Abstract

The purpose of this study is to study French journalism in the film <France>, directed by Bruno Dumont, which was staged in 2021. As indicated in the title of the film, the dual implications of the life and occupation of the protagonist are interesting. First, we look at the duality shown in the film <France> from two perspectives. First, through the allegorical circumstance implied by the name of the heroine France de Meurs, it is inferred that the name of the heroine symbolizes the country of France, and that her full name implies a dying France. In addition, it can be seen that the director, inspired by Charles Péguy’s Par ce demi-clair matin, a literary work about the Dreyfus case, expresses his concerns about national identity through French journalism. It illuminates the gloomy state of French society through the life of a famous journalist and glamorous star, but a female protagonist who is depressed. Next, we will look at satire on French contemporary journalism. The French journalism he sees is more accustomed to disseminating ‘made truth’ rather than the truth. The film satirizes the field of journalism where duties and principles have disappeared, eroded by the modern journalism system dominated by the powers of politics and capital. France’s cynical smile is the director’s gloomy gaze on French journalism and society. Just as the Dreyfus case marked a new turning point in French journalism and showed the new identity of the French people as practicing intellectuals, the film advances into a reflection on the principles of journalism, whose purpose was to convey ‘facts’ and ‘conversation’.
