일본 소재 <별숙향전> 계열의 문헌적 성격 고찰

본고에서는 일본에 소장된 <숙향전> 이본 중에서 나카무라본, 오카쿠라본, 동양문고본의 서지사항, 서술 표현 및 내용, 세 이본의 상호 관계 등을 고찰하였다. 나카무라본은 조선어 통사의 마지막 세대 중 한 사람인 나카무라 쇼지로가 1875년과 1876년에 부산 초량 왜관에서 필사한 것으로서, 상·하 2책으로 되어 있으며, 제명은 “別淑香傳”이다. 이 나카무라본은 <숙향전> 이본 중에서 다른 이본에 비해 서술 행문 및 내용 구성 면에서 가장 온전한 모습을 갖추고 있어 선본(善本)으로서의 가치가 매우 높다. 오카쿠라본은 오카쿠라 요시사부로가 구득했거나 직접 필사한 것으로 추정되는데, 내용의 후반부에서 축약 및 생략이 대폭적으로 이루어진 절략본(節略本)이다. 동양문고본은 일본 동양문고에 소장된 필사본으로서, 내용 및 구성 면에서 오카쿠라본과 거의 동일하다. 그것은 각각의 필사자가 동일 선행본을 저본으로 필사했기 때문으로 보인다. 오카쿠라본과 동양문고본은 나카무라본과도 밀접한 관련이 있다. 세 이본의 서술 행문을 비교해 보면, 서로 일치하는 특징이 두드러지게 나타난다. 이러한 일치성은 이들 세 이본의 뿌리가 동일하였기 때문이다. 세 이본의 공통 선행본이 존재했고, 그 선행본에서 나카무라본과 어떤 절략본이 먼저 생겼을 것으로 본다. 그리고 다시 그 절략본에서 오카쿠라본과 동양문고본이 각각 파생되었기 때문에, 세 이본이 지금과 같은 밀접한 관련성을 지닐 수 있었다. 나카무라본은 완본이지만 오카쿠라본과 동양문고본은 절략본이라는 점, 완본인 나카무라본의 제명이 “別淑香傳”이라는 점 등을 고려할 때, 상기 세 이본을 ‘<별숙향전> 계열’이라고 할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
Among the copies of Sukhyangjeon 淑香傳 in Japan, this paper examines the versions of Nakamura, Okakura, and Dongyang Bookstore, descriptive expressions and contents, and the interrelationship of three versions. The Nakamura version was transcribed by Shojiro Nakamura 中村庄次郞 at the Choryang 草梁 Waegwan(倭館, the office of a Japanese interpreter) in Busan in 1875 and 1876. It consists of two volumes, upper and lower, and the title of the work is Byeol-sukhyangjeon. This Nakamura version has the most complete appearance in terms of content and description in the Sukhyangjeon versions. Therefore, the value is very high. Okakura version is presumed to have been obtained by Yoshisaburo Okakura 岡倉由三郞 or transcribed directly. It is an abbreviated and omitted version in the latter half of the content. The Dongyang Bookstore version is a manuscript held at the Dongyang Bookstore in Japan. It is almost identical to the Okakura version in terms of content and composition. It seems to be because each manuscript has transcribed the same preceding copy. Okakura version and Dongyang Bookstore version are also closely related to Nakamura's. When comparing the description and content of the series, the characteristics that match each other stand out. This consistency is due to the same roots of these series. There was a common preceding text of the three copies, and from that preceding text, Nakamura and a certain omitted version were made first. Then again, the Okakura version and Dongyang Bookstore version were derived from the omitted version. As a result, the three copies were able to have the same close relationship as they are now. Nakamura version, which has a complete form in the description and content, is called Byeol-sukhyangjeon, so the series can be called Byeol-sukhyangjeon series.
