Abstract
‘W University’ and ‘K Jeong’, which appeared in Yeom Sang-Seop’s <Mansejeon(萬歲前)>, refered to Waseda University and Ganda Jeong. In this case, the artist did not follow the practice of writing Chinese characters in the Korean style. Through the expression ‘greeting the new year’ in the novel, it can be seen that the temporal background of <Mansejeon> was December 1918. K Jeong’s ‘ChongGokok’, where Lee In-Hwa purchased various items, was a shopping mall close to a department store. The novel described Lee In-Hwa’s visit to the barber shop or the bookstore as an accident, but in fact, it was not. The fact that ‘M’ Ken visited by Lee In-Hwa in <Mansejeon> was a cafe that provided physical affection says two new facts. Lee In-Hwa from ‘M’ Ken wandered along the K River because of an unknown anger, and it should not be overlooked that the place he rode the tram was in front of the cannon factory. On the tram, he saw the faces of tired workers and thought they are rather naive. However, Lee In-Hwa’s feelings of anger or sympathy for the workers were limited to a part. More importantly, Tokyo was a space free from the feudal oppression of Joseon that sucked him down. Or at least, it can be seen that it was a space where he could forget the feudal oppression. The colonial Joseon before 1919 can be explained through a review of Lee In-Hwa’s change of perception on the journey to Tokyo to GyeongSeong.
