백과사전 올림말 풀이의 언어적 정비 방안에 대하여 ―온라인 『한국민족문화대백과사전』의 경우―

본 연구는 인간 활동에 관한 지식을 요약적으로 풀이한 사전 항목의 체계적 집적체로서 백과사전의 미시구조, 풀이 구조를 언어적 관점에서 분석하고 그 정비 방안을 모색하고자 하였다. 백과사전 정비 방안을 마련하기 위하여 『한국민족문화대백과사전』으로 그 대상을 구체화하고, 올림말이 표방하는 지식에 대한 풀이 방식을 언어적 관점에서 유형화하고자 하였다. 이런 목적에 따라 백과사전 올림말의 미시구조에 접근하는 방법으로 상향식 방법과 하향식 방법, 지식 기반 방법과 표현 기반 방법을 구분하고 표현 기반의 상향식 연구 방법을 적용하였다. 이에 따라 『한국민족문화대백과사전』의 풀이가 전환⋅성과 중심 풀이, 인과 중심 풀이, 과정⋅기능 중심 풀이, 구조화된 속성 중심 풀이의 네 가지 유형이 있음을 밝혔다. 이들은 풀이가 어떠한 정보 유형을 어떠한 속성을 중심으로 어떠한 시간 속성에 따라 내용의 짜임새를 형성하는지를 기준으로 분류하였다. 올림말의 풀이 유형별로 올림말 풀이가 어떠한 짜임새를 가져야 하는지를 제안하고 남은 문제를 정리하였다.
Abstract
This study aims to analyze, from a linguistic perspective, the microstructure and explanatory structure of encyclopedias—defined as systematic compilations of entries that provide concise explanations of knowledge concerning human activities—and to explore ways to improve them. To devise methods for refining encyclopedia entries, the study takes the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture (Minjok Munhwa Daebaekgwa Sajeon) as its concrete material. It seeks to classify, from a linguistic viewpoint, the types of knowledge arrangement found in the explanations of individual headwords. To achieve this goal, the study distinguishes between bottom-up and top-down approaches, as well as between knowledge-based and expression-based methods, in analyzing the microstructure of encyclopedic explanations. Among these, it applies a bottom-up research method grounded in expressions. As a result, the study identifies four distinct types of explanation structures in the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture: A. Conversion- and outcome-centered explanation, B. Causality-centered explanation, C Process- and function-centered explanation, D. Structurally organized attribute-centered explanation. These types are classified based on how the internal structure of the knowledge being explained distinguishes types of information according to specific attributes and temporal features. For each type of explanation, the study proposes the appropriate expression structures that encyclopedic entries should adopt, and summarizes the remaining issues to be addressed.
