This is a study to set up categories for the new Open Korean Knowledge Dictionary, backed by the National Institute of the Korean Language. The dictionary has two characteristics: web–based and knowledge oriented. This study compares 3 large Korean language dictionaries and the representative dictionaries of English, Chinese, Japanese, German, French, and Wikipedia. The categories are constructed by these parameters: First, the categories encompass the development of society. Second, the categories support various social domains. Third, the category should be intuitive for web users. There are several principles to buildup a category system: principles of classification, 5 development principles,2 managing principles, and 4 word distribution principles. This category system can be called the honeycomb system, because the categories can be added and adjusted by users like honeycomb.
