‘마음’이라는 일상용어의 사회학적 함의를 적극적으로 탐색하고자 하는 근자의 시도들에 대한 재고의 일환으로, 본 연구는 인간의 사회적 삶 속에 다양한 형태로 스며들어 있는 마음의 힘에 대한 뿌리 깊은 ‘믿음’을 비판적으로 검토한다. 논문은 마음 개념의 보편적 생산을 ‘몸의 은유’라는 과정을 통해 해명하려는 사고실험에서 출발해, 마음의 역능에 대한 믿음이 표현되는 여러 방식들을 세 가지 마음의 범주—주체가 가진 ‘개별적 마음’, 주체를 포괄하는 ‘집합적 마음’, 흔히 영적 존재라고 불리는 ‘몸 없는 마음’—를 준거로 살펴본다. 각각의 범주하에서 마음은 공히 세계 안에서의 주체의 존재와 운명을 좌우하는 ‘본질-원인’으로 제시되기에, 마음의 범주들에 입각한 인간의 자기이해와 세계이해의 성격에 대한 비판적 논의 또한 수행된다. 결론에서는 마음에의 ‘믿음’과 사회의 ‘인식’ 사이의 근본적인 배제 관계를 환기하면서, 전자의 매혹에서 벗어나 후자의 생산으로 나아가기 위한 하나의 가능한 경로를 ‘사회관계’의 범주를 중심에 놓고 스케치한다.
Abstract
Taking as an opportunity the recent trend in Korean sociology to actively appropriate the everyday term of maum (mind/heart/soul), we examine in this article the source and forms of deeply rooted belief about the power of maum. For this, we first explain the production of the idea of maum through the process of ‘the metaphor of the body.’ We then explore, through three categories of maum (i.e. ‘individual maum,’ ‘collective maum’, and ‘bodyless maum’), the ways in which belief in the power of maum is expressed. Under each category, maum is presented as an ‘essence-cause’ that determines the existence of the subject in the world, so we also examine the functions and limitations of the categories of maum on our self-understanding and world-understanding. The goal behind all these discussions is to reveal the fundamental exclusionary relationship between ‘belief’ in maum and ‘knowledge’ of society.
