Abstract
The expression of Chinese into Hangul has been studied for a long time. The Chinese language, as a tonal language, is different from Korean language and if the Chinese tones are not correctly noted in Hangul and it is difficult to correctly express the Chinese meaning. As different tones determine meanings in the Hangul notation of Chinese, the effective notation of tones is a research problem area that must be solved. Chinese and Hangul are both syllable-based language system employing the same Chinese character culture. In this sense, the pinyin notation method which uses phonemic-based letters is ill equipped to notate pronunciation within the language structure. It is not easy for people to input original Chinese characters to send text messages via mobile phone or for online communication. Moreover, even when Chinese characters are converted into Hangul, it is difficult for users to easily and accurately send texts containing proper tones when subscripts or symbols are based on the syllable as in the pinyin method. This study proposes a method to express the tones of Chinese in Hangul syllables with only the 24 Hangul consonants and vowels, and without using any symbols or subscripts. In Chapter 3, all Chinese characters are assigned pinyin characters and allocated to Hangul. In other words, 1,656 Chinese pronunciation sets were regularly assigned to 11,172 Hangul sets. Of course, the Hangul assignments should reflect the Chinese pronunciation quickly, and the tones should be understood. For this reason, one Korean syllable is assigned to one pinyin and to no more than two pinyin. In chapter 4, it is suggested that changing the Chinese initial, final and tonal characters into the Hangul initial, medial and final characters in a consistent syllable to syllable manner will make the most of the advantages of syllable-based Hangul. It is expected that this study will contribute to the Korean people’s quick learning of Chinese, as well as the Chinese people’s ability to use Hangul as the notation letter of Chinese language.
