이광수와 근대적 문체 형성 - 초기문장을 중심으로 -

Abstract

In <無情(Heartlessness)>, the first Korean modern novel written by Gwang-su Lee, a modern point of view takes an important role along with modern content. However, the usage of the third person point of view and the past tense was still unstable and the unification of writing and speaking was poorly developed. Nevertheless, it was almost a miracle to write a novel in a tone that people speak, because previously the writing styles were separated into Chinese or Korean. This miracle wasn’t built in a day. It benefited from foreign literature. Japanese literature had already developed a style that synchronizes speaking and writing, and Western literature, which was translated into Japanese, and then into Korean, had already developed the synchronization, and contributed to the development of Korean literature’s modern writing style. The change starts with Gwang-su Lee, who wrote his <Takgeuk Hakbo> in modern sentences in 1908. Then there follows a variety of writings and translations such as a writing of Japanese novel <Is It Love>, the retranslation from Japanese <Uncle Tom’s Cabin> into Korean. In this study, we will look into the process Gwan-su Lee had gone through to create a modern style of writing.
