비유신론적 기독교의 가능성 탐색 ― 존 셀비 스퐁, 돈 큐핏, 존 로이드 기링의 신학을 중심으로

그리스도 교회는 하나님을 세계의 창조자이자 주관자이며 마침내 그것을 최후의 완성으로 이끄는 선하고 거룩한 분으로 고백해왔다. 이런하나님 이해는 중세 후기 이후 자존하고 영원하며 그 무엇에도 영향받지 않는 전지전능한 천상의 절대자, 곧 ‘유신론적’ 하나님으로 표상되었고 세계와 맺는 관계로는 세상의 주(Lord), 왕(King), 아버지(Father) 로 이해되었다. 하지만 유신론적으로 표상된 이런 신‐이해는 오늘날여러 이유로 비판받고 있으며 그 가장 강력한 비판 하나는 우리 시대의주요한 자유주의 신학자들인 미국의 존 셀비 스퐁(John Shelby Spong), 영국의 돈 큐핏(Donald Cupitt) 그리고 뉴질랜드의 존 로이드 기링(John Lloyd Geering)으로부터 나오고 있다. 강조하는 지점들은 조금씩 다르지만 이들 모두는 유신론적으로 이해된 기독교는 시효를 다했기에 비유신론적인 기독교로 넘어가야 하고 더 나아가 하나님의 객체성(objectivity) 혹은 실재성(reality)도 벗어버린 기독교가 되어야 한다고주장한다. 이 글은 이 자유주의 신학자들의 유신론 비판과 이들이 생각하는 새로운 기독교의 모습을 검토한 후 하나님의 객체성과 초월성을하나님의 현존인 예수 그리스도 안에서 발견하는 것이 신학의 학문적논리상 올바른 길임을 말하고자 한다.
Abstract
The Christian Church has confessed God as the creator and preserver of the universe and who in the final day will lead it to its final consummation. This idea of God has become in the late Middle Ages the traditional theism which depicts God as a holy and remote supreme Being who reigns with almighty power and knowledge. Yet this understanding of God has been criticized in many ways, especially by contemporary prominent liberal theologians, like John Shelby Spong, Donald Cupitt, and John Lloyd Geering. These theologians refute not only the theistically constructed God but also denies the reality(objectivity) of God. This paper examines these theologians’ thoughts and argues that Christian theology must preserve the objectivity and transcendentality of God and the best way to do this is to find out these traits in the person of Jesus Christ.
