Abstract

Art colleges and art departments of colleges are faced with the question of survival and/or reform. The definition of arts as vocation and the sound arts market are yet to be established. There is a lack of policies and data that are required to provide arts-major students with effective career guidelines. This paper reviews the current status and challenges of the standards for the assessment of art colleges and departments focusing on employment percentage of graduates and curriculum evaluation criteria, and suggests ways for improvement. First, the standards for the assessment of the employment percentage of graduates have improved by deciding to recognize, from 2015, “private persons engaged in creative activities” as employed. However, recognition criteria call for detailed revision, certain fields of arts remain unrecognized, and the objectivity of recognition criteria needs verification. Second, there is an urgent need to secure reliability of National Competency Standards (NCS). Additional processes are required to closely analyze, verify, and complement arts-related jobs and to catch up with global standards. Ultimately, the assessment standards should aim at nurturing forward-looking manpower, who would effectively address the changes in the highly value-added arts industry by securing academic excellence and global competence.
