Abstract

The purpose of this study was to survey the students majoring in art, music or sports on their perception of the jobs as well as the demands for their jobs based on employment rates, which is the most important indicator for the evaluation of universities. The study addresses the problems facing the universities and their professors due to the poor evaluation in reference to their graduates' employment rates, and then, suggests the solutions. Currently, various research institutions suggest many classification systems of art, music and sports areas. This study was conducted based on the faculty/department standard code classification system presented by the Korea Council for University Education. Based on this classification, we surveyed about the actual condition of manpower supplies in art, music and sports areas. 197 professors and 1,572 prospective graduates from 150 departments of universities and 194 departments of junior colleges (344 departments in total) were sampled. The survey was focused on their perception of the jobs in each field. After analyzing this survey, we found out that the evaluation of universities and colleges had been conducted according to uniform standards, not considering the characteristics of art, music and sports departments. Such results also suggest that it would be necessary to apply different employment rates for the students majoring in art, music or sports.
