음악교육철학자 베넷 리머(Bennett Reimer, 1932-2013)가 제안하는 의미 상승적 접근(synergistic approach)은 극단적 상대주의의 사고를 지양하는 흐름을 반영한 것이며, 그간 너무나 편협하게 이해되어 온 미적 교육으로서의 음악교육을 재개념화 하려는 의도가 반영된 것이라 할 수 있다. 그렇기 때문에 리머의 의미 상승적 접근 대한 논의를 검토하는 일은 음악교육에 대한 함의를 이끌어내기 위해서도 매우 중요하다. 본고는 리머가 제안하는 의미 상승적 접근이 어떻게 개념화되고 있는지 이해하는 데 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해 의미 상승적 접근의 철학적 프레임을 검토하고 그것이 음악교육철학의 논의와 교수학습의 맥락에서 요구되는 까닭은 무엇인지, 그리고 의미 상승적 접근이 그러한 맥락에서 갖는 의미는 무엇인지 이야기할 것이다. 더불어 의미 상승적 접근의 의의와 한계 그리고 시사점에 대해서도 언급할 것이다.
Abstract
The vision of “synergistic approach” proposed by Bennett Reimer (1932-2013) is one that reflects on the stream of contemporary postmodern thinking avoiding extreme relativistic ideas. Using this concept Reimer intends to reconceptualize aesthetic music education for overcoming a narrow understanding of music education as aesthetic education. Therefore, it is important to examine Reimer's synergistic approach or “synergism” in order to understand the implication of music education. The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the concept of synergistic approach proposed by Bennett Reimer. For this purpose, I would like to explore the meaning and philosophical frames of synergistic approach and to indicate why this concept is required for discussions about philosophical perspectives on music education and contexts of teaching and learning music. I, then, also elaborate on the meaning of synergistic approach in the context of practices of music education, and additionally discuss about the significances and limitations of this concept.
