초록

본고는 아직 우리나라에서는 시작단계인 커뮤니티연극과 그 구성을 시카고 콜럼비아 칼리지의 경우를 통해서 살펴보고자 했다. 커뮤니티연극은 그 커뮤니티의 구성원과 다양하게 소통하며, 공연을 통해서 구성원의 변화를 촉구하며, 민주적 문화 참여의 길을 열고자 한다. 커뮤니티연극의 지속성을 위해서는 지역 대학 혹은 파트너와의 건전한 관계가 중요하다. 이러한 네트워크를 통해서 커뮤니티연극은 더욱 공고히 발전할 수 있고 대학은 지역사회에 대한 봉사와 자신 대학의 예술가들을 지역사회에 적극적으로 취업시킬 수 있다. 실제로 콜럼비아 칼리지 시카고와 방과 후 커뮤니티 연계교육과의 협업을 경험하면서, 수업을 통한 저소득 청소년 커뮤니티의 변화를 느꼈으며, 궁극적으로 더욱더 커뮤니티연극의 필요성을 인지하였다. 우리도 방과후 예술교육 등을 통하여, 청소년을 순화하고 예술가에게 취업을 창출하는 효과를 볼 수 있을 것이라 확신하다. 이제 21세기 해외의 커뮤니티연극은 제 3단계에 이르러서 새로운 개념의 파라다임을 만들고 있는데, 우리도 이제 예술연극이나 상업연극을 넘어서 커뮤니티연극을 조직하고 이에 대한 지원을 확대할 시점이다.

Abstract

This paper studies the meanings, the organizations, and the factual practices of the community theatres though the cases of the Columbia College Chicago’s Center for Community Arts Partnership. Community theatres in Chicago have strong networks with universities and NGO organizations. Their networks are important for community theatres for longer survival, while universities get benefits of their graduates’ employment. While most students joined the community theatre program because of a small stipend, they became interested in art, and it stimulated them to improve their everyday lives. Indeed, the community theatres can bond the people in the community, improve their lives, and even correct their behaviors as I saw in after-school productions. Now it is a time for Korean theatre to pay attention to the community theatres, and to expand the boundary of theatre beyond theatres for art’s sake or commercial theatres.
