예술교육의 토대로서 ‘철학함’

현행의 예술교육은 입시 위주 교과목에 밀려 명맥을 겨우 유지하고 있거나 소수 전공자를 위한 수월성 위주의 사교육이 대부분이다. 그러나 예술교육이 우리 사회의 무감각(anesthetic)을 일깨우고 개인과 사회의 활력을 불러 오는, 인간으로서의 삶을 살아가는 데에 매우 중요한 경험이라는 것을 깨닫는다면 재능 있는 소수가 아닌 모두를 위한 새로운 예술교육으로 변모되어야 할 것이다. 삶을 위한 새로운 예술교육으로 나아가기 위해 본고에서는 존 듀이의 철학을 근간으로 한 맥신 그린의 예술교육 사상을 고찰하고자 한다. 그린의 예술교육은 심미적 경험을 통해 ‘널리 깨어 있음(wide-awakeness)’을 얻어 삶의 의미를 찾는 것을 목표로 한다. 이러한 예술교육은 상상력과 사고력을 바탕으로 질문하고 대화하는 탐구의 과정의 철학교육의 한 방법이다. 이는 예능교육이나 작품에 대한 지식 교육을 중시한 전통 예술교육과 차별화되는, 비판과 성찰을 기반으로 자아 성장을 위한 삶을 위한 예술교육이며 ‘철학함(doing philosophy)으로서의 예술교육’이다.
Abstract
The current paper offers a guideline for transforming arts education into that for the wider society by first examining the concepts of ‘the arts’ and ‘education’ through the lens of John Dewey’s philosophy, then contemplating upon Maxine Greene’s philosophy of arts education. At the heart of Maxine Greene’s arts education is the objective of finding the meaning of life through ‘wide-awakeness’ which, in turn, is achieved through aesthetic experiences. Within this frame of thought, arts education itself is a process of inquiry. Such a process is, in effect, the methodology of philosophy education or ‘doing philosophy,’ that is based upon conversation and inquiry. This methodology of philosophy education that is a part of ‘doing philosophy’ can lead to a system of arts education that provides for everyone an awakening of the mind, fostering of creativity, and an ensuing life of vitality.
