이 글은 현재 우리나라의 공교육을 비롯한 도처의 교육현장에서 나타나고 있는 예술교육의 확대 현상에 주목하고 이 현상에 결부된 기대가 주로 인성의 함양과 밀접하게 연관되어 있지만, 이 둘의 연관성에 대한 구체적인 개념적 설명이나 해명은 부재하다는 문제의식에서 출발한다. 그리고 이 연관성을 밝힐 하나의 설명 방식으로서 ‘감정교육’의 개념을 제시하고자 한다. 이를 위해 먼저 특정 예술영역에 종사하는 전문 예술인이 아닌 보통 사람을 위한 예술교육에서 의미할 수 있는 ‘예술’과 ‘예술경험’의 개념을 밝히고, 이것의 교육적 가치를 탐색한다. 이 탐색에서 핵심적 관심은 예술경험을 통한 교육에서 감정과 정서가 차지하는 중요성에 있다. 그리하여 감정 혹은 감정적 인식이 인간적 품성의 함양과 맺는 관계를 누스바움의 ‘서사적 상상력을 통한 공감적 이해’와 로빈슨의 ‘감정교육’의 관점에서 살펴보며 예술교육을 통한 인간성 함양은 결국 우리가 처한 삶의 구체적 맥락에서 이전과는 다른 다양한 각도로 그 상황을 바라보고 섬세하게 대응할 수 있는 능력으로서의 도덕적 상상력의 계발과 다르지 않다는 것을 보이고자 한다.
Abstract
This essay attempts to make a conceptual clarification of the connection between arts education and its alleged aim as the development of humanities, connection which has been taken for granted in the recent development of arts-education movement mobilized by the government. This clarification draws upon the idea of sentimental education as the aim of arts-education. As the first step to embark on this task, we try to clarify the nature of arts and our experiences in arts which make 'arts' a unique set of subject-matters for education for all, not just for professional artists. And then we take the second step to explore this nature in terms of its educational values and significance in contribution to the development of the youngster's humanities. We takes the most important feature of arts as their power to engage us into them "emotionally." Arts are in a symbolic structure of different qualitative languages that stimulates and engage us emotionally into its subject-matter. This emotional power triggers in us narrative imaginations and empathy in Nussbaum's terms, and cultivates our emotions in the form of sentimental education in Robinson's theory, so as to form and transform our sense of being human as well as the way we treat others as human beings. Therefore, we can say in conclusion that one of the purposes of arts education is to develop moral imagination within us that can develop our capability to perceive, feel, and understand the concrete situations of moral dilemma and predicament around us in a manner different from before in order to respond to the world in a new and creative way. This capability is required for the citizens of the world today which is pluralistic in values and in which things are constantly changing and unpredictable without a set of criteria for us to live by.
