19세기 오페레타의 전환적 역할 연구- 오펜바흐와 길버트․설리번의 대중 지향적 작품 활동을 중심으로

이 연구는 산업혁명과 시민혁명으로 대표되는 19세기의 급격한 사회적 변화 속에서 그 양식을 확립한 오페레타가 뮤지컬 장르의 형성을 위해 수행했던 역할을 규명한다. 오페라가 뮤지컬의 원류라는 일반적인 설명이 틀리지는 않지만, 현대 뮤지컬의 절대적 특성인 대중성을 고려한다면 대중적 속성을 지닌 오페레타가 중간 단계로써 뮤지컬에 직접 연결된다는 설명이 더 정확하다. 프랑스의 오펜바흐는 오페레타를 대중화한 인물이고 그의 대표작 <지옥의 오르페우스>에서 발견되는 풍자와 패러디는 그 대중적 성격을 증명한다. 영국 길버트․설리번의 코믹 오페라도 풍자와 패러디를 활용해 대중적 인기를 확보했으며, 이는 미 대륙에까지 파급된 <군함 피나포어>의 영향력을 통해 확인할 수 있다. 오펜바흐의 오페레타가 확보했던 대중성의 발판 위에서 길버트와 설리번은 대중적인 작품들을 번성시켰고 뮤지컬의 초기 양식과도 밀접한 관련을 맺는다.
Abstract
This study explores the role that the operetta, established during the industrial and social upheaval of the 19th century, played in the formation of modern musical genres. Operas are commonly attributed as the source of musicals. But given the absolute popularity of modern musicals, it is more accurate to identify the operetta, with its mainstream attributes, as directly connected to musicals as a bridge between the two. France’s Offenbach popularized operettas and that can be seen from the satires and parodies of his work, Orphée aux Enfers. The comic operas of the Gilbert and Sullivan duo in England also enjoyed great popularity by using satires and parodies, exemplified in their work, H.M.S. Pinafore. The popularity of Offenbach’s operettas allowed Gilbert and Sullivan’s works to flourish in the mainstream and pave the way for musicals.
