Abstract
This article attempt to reexamine Siegfried Kracauer’s (1889-1966) Jacques Offenbach and the Paris of His Time, where presents the operettas of Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880) as a social medium for the ‘Biography of a Society’ of the 19th century Paris. According to the empirical researches and the 19th century music history, the Offenbach’s operettas were often relegated to a peripheral genre, as a mere entertainment originated from opera, in that it had acquired not enough consideration among the 19th Century music. In contrast, Kracauer placed Offenbach’s works to reconstruct the society of 19th Century Paris, which provide a proper guidance to view operetta based on its social, cultural and historical importance. Through this, this research demonstrates how Kracauer’s work offers insightful perspectives and a new understanding not only of Offenbach’s operettas but also of the 19th Century musical landscape.
