초기 한국교회의 선교사 파송에 관한 연구

초록

일반적으로 부흥운동이 있으면 자연스럽게 선교운동이 전개된다고 주장한다. 선교를 하기 위해서는 부흥운동이 먼저 전개되어야 한다는것이다. 한국교회는 초기에 부흥운동이 있었고 피선교지로서 빠르게선교사를 파송하였다. 그런데 한국교회가 선교를 하였다는 사실에 대한기록은 있으나, 선교를 하게 된 원인이나 동기에 대한 연구는 없다. 따라서 초기 한국교회의 선교사 파송 동기를 밝히고자 함이 본 연구의목적이다. 이를 위하여 한국교회의 역사적 자료에 근거하여 초기 한국교회의 선교사 파송 역사, 곧 초기 선교의 시기인 1903년부터 1913년까지일어난 홍승하의 하와이 선교, 이기풍의 제주도 선교, 중국의 산동성선교를 살펴보았다. 그리고 선교사들의 파송 당시 정황들을 통하여그들이 선교하게 된 동기가 무엇이었는지를 찾아보았다. 또한 한국에파송된 선교사들이 선교사 파송에 어떤 역할을 하였는지를 살펴보았다. 본 논문의 결론은, 초기 한국교회가 선교사를 파송한 주요 동기는선교사들이 선교의식을 심은 데 있다고 본다. 이를 위하여 외국인선교사들은 구체적인 역할을 감당하였다. 또한 초기 한국교회가 선교사를 파송한 동기는 다른 이유도 있다. 그것은 만주, 블라디보스토크,몽골과 같은 지역에 한국인 이민자들이 많이 나갔다는 사실과 만주에서복음을 전하던 스코틀랜드 선교부가 만주지역의 한국인들에 대한 선교를 한국인이 책임져 달라는 공식적인 요청이 있었기 때문이다. 본연구를 통하여 초기 한국교회의 선교가 주는 시사점은, 지속적인 선교의식의 고취가 중요하다는 점이다. 그러므로 교인이 된다는 것은 선교하는자로 부름 받았다는 의식을 심어 주어야 한다. 다른 하나는 교회 지도자들이 먼저 생활 선교를 해야 한다는 점이다. 지금 한국교회는 “니느웨로 가라”는 하나님의 명령에 요나가 하나님의 낯을 피하여 다른 곳으로 갔던 것처럼(욘 1:1-3) 한국교회가 다른곳으로 가고 있지 않은지 철저하게 자성이 필요한 시점에 서 있다. 한국교회는 이미 외적인 성장 정체기에 진입하였다. 다시 일어설 수있는 비결은, 초기 한국교회가 보여준 선교하는 교회가 되도록 선교의식을 회복하는 데 있다. 그럴 때 교회가 희망이라는 선교 메시지에 한국사회가 반향을 일으킬 것이고, 교회는 선교하는 기쁨을 찾게 될 것이다.

Abstract

There is a belief that the missions field tends to flourishwhenever there is a revival. This belief is based on the ideathat to pursue missions work, an expansive revival must firsttake place. According to the Korean Church's early history,there was a revival in the land and after receiving missionaries,the country quickly began sending missionaries. However, whilethere are records of the Korean church doing missions work,there are no reports as to why they started. The purpose ofthis study is to bring to light the motivations behind the KoreanChurch's dispatch of missionaries. To do so, I examined historicaldata related to the Korean Church specifically in the revivalmovement and dispatch of missionaries. I focused on the decadefrom 1903 to 1913 in which Hong Seongha's missions in Hawaii,Lee Kipoong's missions in Jeju Island, and missions in Shandong,China took place. I researched the circumstances under whichmissionaries left their homes, hoping to find possible motivationsfor their dispatch. I also examined the interaction between themissionaries sent from Korea and the Korean Church to seehow one affected the other. The most important conclusion I made from this studyis that the Korean Church must return to its essentials to bea missional church again. For this to happen, an awarenessof missions must be awakened. The early Korean Churchmissionaries played a major role in ensuring the church'sinvolvement in missions. Reasons for this included reachingthe Koreans in places such as Manchuria, Vladivostok, andMongolia. In the case of Manchuria, there was the formal requestby the Scottish missions, who initially brought the gospel, forthe Korean missions to take responsibility of ministering tothe Koreans in Manchuria. Through this study, I saw theimportance of the early Korean Church's missions whichencouraged a continuous awareness of missions. Therefore,this must be made known: to become a church member isto receive a calling to become a missionary. What follows fromthis is the leaders of the church are called to be the forerunnersof living missional lives. The Korean church today must devote thoroughexamination of itself to see if it is not going down a differentpath as Jonah did to avoid God’s will when God commandedhim “Go to the city of Nineveh.”(Jonah 1:1-3) The Korean churchhas already reached stagnancy in it's growth in numbers. Itmust now learn from its early days and recover awareness ofmissions to be a church that does missions. In that time, thechurch will instill the message of hope through missions inKorean society and it will find the joy of missions again.
