Abstract

This study explores the early revival movements in Kore an Protestant history namely the Wonsan Revival, the Pyong yang Great Revival, the Million Souls Revival Movement, and Baengnyeongdo Revival Movement from a missiological perspective. These revivals were not merely emotional religious outbursts but catalytic events that marked a significant transition in the Korean church from a passive recipient of West ern missions to an active, indigenous agent of evangelism. The study analyzes each movement’s origin, theological character, and spiritual outcome, emphasizing the role of the Holy Spirit, collective repentance, ethical transformation, and the expansion of public witness. The Wonsan Revival began with missionary R. A. Hardie’s personal confession of failure, sparking communal repentance and spiritual awakening. The Pyongyang Revival was led by Korean leaders like Kil Sun-ju and spread nationwide, establishing a prototype of Spirit-filled, community-based revival. The Million Souls Campaign institutionalized evangelistic zeal through grassroots mobilization, promoting the concept of “every believer a missionary.” These movements embody core missiological principles such as Missio Dei, the decentralization of mission leadership, the integration of faith and ethics, and the public dimension of the gospel. They illustrate how revival, when rooted in authentic repentance and empowered by the Holy Spirit, leads to sustainable mission and social renewal. Ultimately, this paper argues that the Korean revival movements offer a theological model for today’s church: one that calls for Spirit-led renewal, lay empowerment, and a return to mission-centered identity in an increasingly secularized age.
