Abstract
The mission of the Korean church is standing at the crossroads between its rapid increase in the late 20th century and the sharp decline in the early 21st century. It can be said that mission does not start with a clean slate but in the the context which is fundamentally conditioned by previous history. In this sense, this article aims to look back on the history of early missionaries’s Asia mission as the prehistory of the Korean church’s world mission. This articles divides Asia mission history into three periods, that is, pre-modern Western missionary movement(hereafter Wmm), modern Wmm, post-modern Wmm, examining 5, 7, and 3 arguments reflecting each periods. For the pre-modern Wmm are investigated Jesus’s mission(diverse missionary perspectives), Jerusalem Church’s mission(evangelism, church planting, church supporting), Antioch Church’s mission(mission on the move, mission by men), Asia mission(Near East mission--church and state, second-class citizens with persecution and submission, migration), and East Syrian Church’s mission(traditionalism, indigenization). For modern Wmm, Western church’s Asia mission(Japan, China, India, Vietnam, Korea), two kinds of Protestant missions(interdenominational missionary society, denominational mission board), centralization vs decentralization or devolution, mission policy(evangelization, civilizing mission, nationalism), mission and ecumenical movement, mission and three-self policy, and the change of missionary category(Westerners and non-Westerners, clergy and lay people, men and women). And for post-modern Wmm, the rise of post-colonialism and ecumenical mission(partnership mission, national church-initiated mission, mission in six continents, mission of God), non-Western church’s mission, and Asia mission. This article delves Asia mission history mainly from the viewpoint of arguments. And yet the arguments are in general related to the issues such as missiological understanding, mission policy, group dynamics among the interested parties, and missionary work etc. However, what constitutes and gives impetus to mission is missionary spirit, that is, missionary spirituality. Thus, this study needs to be supplemented by follow-up research based on missionary spirituality. The mission of the Korean church can be said to be mission actualizing the idea of ‘self-missionizing’, representing non-Western church’s mission, and centering on Asia. Now, bearing these three features in mind, the Korean church needs to go further with “the feet of someone coming to preach the good news”(Rom. 10:15).
