Abstract
It is commonly known that the remarkable growth and revival movements in the early days of the Korean church were greatly contributed to Bible classes and Sunday schools. However, Bible-centered faith was necessarily paired with prayer, and in fact, prayer was one of the biggest driving forces behind the revival of the Korean church. While some scholars claim that the impetus for the Korean church’s emphasis on prayer from its earliest days was influenced by Taoism, it is almost an illogical speculation lacking documentary evidence. Rather, it is reasonable to judge that the passion and example for prayer demonstrated by the early missionaries in Korea served as a model to Korean Christians. The missionaries were people of prayer even before coming to Korea, and during their ministry in Korea, they not only showed their own passionate prayer life but also taught Koreans about prayer and organized various prayer meetings. It cannot be denied that their efforts and the passion of Koreans for prayer coalesced into a great force that led the revival movements from 1903 to 1910. Moreover, through the fruits or results obtained in that process, their passion could be further kindled. This paper aims to describe that historical process, delving into broad original sources. Specifically, it discusses in order the passion of the missionaries and Korean Christians for prayer, the organization of various prayer meetings, the relationship between revival movements and prayers, and the fruits of prayer.
