본 논문의 목적은 19세기 말 20세기 초 서구세계로부터 조선에 왔던 당시 조선 선교사들과 그 선교사들에게 부응한 한국교회 및 그 성도들에 관한 연구이다. 이를 위해 20세기 조선에 왔던 선교사들의 선교적 가치를 반추해보고, 21세기 한국선교사들이 비서구 종족에게 미칠 선교적 영향을 고찰하는 것이다. 이것이 중요한 이유는 첫째, 조선에서 이루어진 선교는 세계에서 찾아보기 드문 성경적 선교 사역이었으며, 둘째, 당시 아프리카와 남미 그리고 다른 대륙이나 지역에서 행해졌던 제국주의적 선교유형과는 달리 성경중심의 개혁주의 선교모델이었기 때문이다. 셋째는, 지역교회 개척초기 삼자원리와 더불어 하나님 중심, 교회 중심, 그리고 말씀 중심이 선교의 모토가 되었다는 것이다. 그러한 삶과 더불어 교회를 개척하며 살아왔던 조선의 선교사들의 모범적 삶을 통해 조선의 기독교인들은 ‘오직 믿음’, ‘오직 은혜’, 그리고 ‘오직 하나님께 영광’이라는 굳건한 신앙의 초석을 놓을 수 있었다. 한국교회는 포스트모더니즘(Postmodernism)과 세속화(Secularism) 등으로 인해 혼탁한 오늘날에도 흔들림 없이 개혁주의 세계선교를 통해 세계선교의 커다란 역할을 감당하고 있다. 이제 한국교회와 선교사들은 마28:18-20절, 소위 ‘대위임령’(The Great Commission)을 수행하기 위해 하나님께서 보내셨던 그들의 숭고한 삶을 다시 반추하고, 21세기 개혁주의 선교사역을 주저함 없이 수행해야 한다. 이런 점에서, 조선에서 행해졌던 선교사들의 선교사역은 세계적인 선교모델로서의 충분한 가치를 제시했다. 그들의 선교사역은 오직 예수 그리스도의 대위임령을 성취하기 위함이었고, 또 2000년 전 예수님께서 말씀하셨던 사도행전 1:8절의 성취였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is not only to investigate the lives, attitudes, and the missionary works of Korean missionaries who came to Korea from the Western world between the late 19C and the early 20C. It is also to find the impacts of the result of their mission works performed in those times. On the other side, the Korean church members who responded to the missionary works with their participations will be considered, too. The reason why to find the trace of the Korean missionary impacts and the Korean church mission is to establish the future mission of the Korean church in the 21st century in a great way. To be frank, Christian mission works done in Korea got number of strong points as follow. First, it is already enough to be an exemplary missionary work in the world. Second, there was no colonialism engaged with its missions. Third, they had been performing their missionary work with an outstanding impacts without any imperialism. They did the missions within the principles of the Biblical mission model without imperialistic missionary attitudes or actions that were conducted in other continents or regions in Africa. Fourth, they made their mottos God-Centered, Church-Centered, and Bible-Centered when they planted the local churches in the beginning stage of their missions. Through the exemplary lives of the Korean missionaries, the Korean Christians in the church could live their lives with the solid foundations of only faith, only grace, and only glory to God. However the Korean church members never compromise with secularization. This will promote to perform a significant role for the world mission as the reformist Bible-centered missionaries in the 21C. Lastly missions conducted in Korea with the “Comity Agreement” and “Three-Self Principal” mission and its impacts became the absolute invaluable values to the Korean Christian missions. What the missionaries in ‘Corea’ had done was only for the fulfillment of the Great Commission of Jesus Christ (Mt 28:18-20).
