Abstract
This study stems from the need for a carefully designed professional development program for arts educators amidst rapidly growing interests in cultural and arts education in Korea. Among the governmental agencies, in particular, the arts education system of Seoul Foundation of Arts and Culture becomes a prominent case for this study for its wide-ranged arts education programs for arts educators and general public as well as primary and secondary students. The Foundation’s vision of arts education is represented through its unique motto of ‘aesthetic education’, strongly influenced and benchmarked by the practice and philosophy of Lincoln Center Institute in New York City. This study examines the preliminary inquiry as a basis for the Foundation’s Teaching Artists (TA) development program, focusing on areas of theoretical foundations for arts education and creativity, the meaning of aesthetic education, and for drama-based arts education. The reviews of modules and characteristics of the professional development programs for arts educators in the U. S. and U. K. follows with a perspective of drawing a comparison with those of Korean cases. The study then seeks for the working definition of Teaching Artist and proposes some key virtues that the work of TA requires. They are: student/participant-centered approach; emphasis on artistic accessibility over artistic excellence; consciousness, or “wide-awakeness”; and openness and flexibility. The study concludes with suggestions of designing guidelines for well-balanced, systemic, and sustainable TA development program for public institution such as Seoul Foundation of Arts and Culture.
