Abstract

This study systematically analyzed the assessment items in the third and fourth grade music textbooks developed for the 2022 Revised National Curriculum, their structural characteristics, and directions for improvement. To do so, evaluation sections and tasks functioning as assessment items were extracted from seven authorized textbooks and classified according to four criteria: content domain (performance, appreciation, creation), assessment methods (observation, practical performance, sound-based written tests, essay tests, oral tests, reports, projects), content category (knowledge and understanding, process and skills, values and attitudes), and source (teacher, peers, self). The analysis revealed that performance-oriented items and observation-based assessments (using three-point rating scales) accounted for the largest proportion, and that ‘knowledge and understanding’ items predominated while those assessing values and attitudes were relatively scarce. Self-assessment appeared most frequently, whereas peer assessment was limited and teacher assessment was rare. Some textbooks attempted to diversify evaluation methods by introducing sound-based written tests, essays, oral tests, reports, and project-based evaluations. However, the tools for assessing the planning–implementation–presentation stages of projects were insufficient, and digital-based assessment were generally lacking. These results suggest the need to mitigate the excessive emphasis on performance-oriented tasks, strengthen the appreciation and creation domains, expand descriptive assessment items examining conceptual and procedural knowledge, design tools linked to classroom activities with achievement criteria and stage-specific rubrics, and establish assessment systems incorporating digital tools.
