Abstract

This study examined 21 sixth-grade elementary school students’ rewriting of explanatory texts using a generative AI tool (Wrtn). The study focused on students’ prompt generation and rewriting patterns to explore the potential and implications of AI-based writing education. The results showed that among 88 prompts, “Judgment and Evaluation” was the most frequent type, followed by “Information Request” and “Invention.” Rewriting was occurred mainly at the sentence (41%) and paragraph (40%) levels, with addition (50%) being the most common strategy. AI feedback was reflected in three types: uncritical acceptance, critical review followed by application, and restructuring and integration. Although students evaluated AI as a “useful tool that encourages detailed writing and reduces typos,” they also noted limitations such as “awkward expression.” Based on these findings, the study proposes three educational implications. First, learners’ ability to generate effective prompts should be systematically developed to make their thinking processes more visible and to foster higher-order questioning. Second, critical literacy education should be reinforced to enhance students’ ability to verify and appropriately use the authenticity and relevance of information provided by artificial intelligence. Third, generative AI can function as a scaffolding tool that provides individualized and immediate feedback, thereby enhancing students’ metacognitive awareness and understanding of writing strategies.
