Abstract
This study aims to examine the differential effects of social capital on elementary school students’ judgment of human rights and draw educational implications. To this end, it conducted multiple regression analysis using elementary school data from the National Youth Policy Institute’s 2022 Survey on the Human Rights Status of Children and Adolescents. The main findings are as follows. First, with respect to family social capital, parents’ respect for children’s decision-making significantly and positively affected students’ judgment of human rights. Second, with respect to school social capital, the school’s normative structure and trust between teachers and peers positively influenced students’ judgment of human rights. Third, community social capital had a significant positive effect on students’ judgment of human rights. Based on these findings, the study suggests the following measures: at the family level, activating parental education programs that promote democratic communication respecting children’s opinions is necessary. At the school level, participatory human rights education programs for students and a human rights-friendly normative structure can help students internalize standards for guaranteeing human rights; furthermore, teacher–peer trust provides a psychological basis for respecting others’ perspectives and emotions. Finally, at the community level, efforts should be made to extend the human rights awareness formed in families and schools to broader social contexts by providing opportunities for children’s active participation. In conclusion, implementing human rights education strategies using social capital in educational settings can better equip elementary school students to critically recognize and reasonably judge human rights issues across diverse social contexts
