Abstract
Amid accelerating AI-driven digital transformation, this study examines the culture of Korean language education and reconceptualizes the roles and tasks of Korean language teachers. Drawing on domestic and international trends and policy documents, the study synthesizes key characteristics of educational culture in the AI era. It then demonstrates instructional changes through cases from the King Sejong Institute, including metaverse initiatives, online courses, and AI-based assessment. In these contexts, teachers’ core roles extend beyond transmitting functional knowledge to encompass three dimensions: cultural mediators who integrate language and culture to contextualize meaning; learning designers who interpret learner data to strengthen formative assessment; and ethical authorities who assess the affordances and limitations of AI use. Drawing on Levinas’s notion of responsibility for the Other, the study emphasizes the teacher as an ethical subject who welcomes learners’ cultural backgrounds and engages collaboratively in reflecting on pedagogical validity. The resulting tasks include balancing technology and pedagogy; creating ongoing opportunities for reskilling and information exchange to build digital literacy; diversifying programs that integrate culture and education by leveraging advanced technologies while responding to local demand for Korean culture; ensuring the reliability of AI-based assessments through teacher oversight; and addressing learners’ in access to and use of digital tools. In conclusion, Korean language teachers should employ AI as a tool while prioritizing human and cultural judgment, thereby fostering an integrated professionalism that enhances learning outcomes and cultural understanding.
