Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), including ChatGPT, into Korean education and proposes directions for its effective incorporation. As AI continues to bring about innovative changes in society and emerge as a tool for thinking and learning, it becomes increasingly important to embrace AI within language education, a discipline that is both tool-oriented and thinking-oriented. The study first examines whether AI should be a subject of Korean education and argues that a more active approach to AI incorporation is necessary for the development of students' thinking skills and digital media utilization capabilities. Subsequently, the paper explores potential methods of incorporating AI into Korean education. It suggests that teaching students to meta-cognitively recognize linguistic interactions in digital environments through computational thinking is essential, as well as including AI as a thinking tool and an auxiliary medium for "working memory" to enable language activities. Furthermore, the paper emphasizes the importance of acknowledging AI as a communication subject and promoting thinking expansion through interaction with AI. It also encourages diverse approaches for problem-solving in Korean education through AI from an edutech perspective. In conclusion, the paper highlights the significance of integrating AI into Korean education, presenting new opportunities for enhancing students' learning experience and preparing them for an increasingly digital world.
