Abstract
This study reviews the language policy in Kazakhstan tounderstand the current situation of the three main languages: Kazakhas a state language, Russian as a language of interethniccommunication and official language, and English as a newlyrespected main language, and predicts the future of the languagepolicy in Kazakhstan focusing on trilingualism. Since theindependence, Kazakh language has been supported to be a statelanguage worthy of its name by the government with the policiessuch as legislation, education, paper work, qualification for highofficials such as president, etc. However, Russian is still influentialbecause of the large number of Kazakhs who prefer to use it in dailylife and schools as well as the Russian diaspora living there. Inaddition, Russian has been considered to be useful for the regionalcooperation in Central Asia for the relationship with Russia and otherpost-Soviet countries. The Kazakhstan government also recommendsits nation have English competence to be competitively integrated inthe global economy and international relations. Although it could be aslow process, Nazarbayev administration would pursue the ideal goalof the Trinity of languages to develop the nation's potential for aprosperous future in Kazakhstan. However, it stays uncertain whetherthe trilingual competence can be realized in the near future. Thetrilingual model would be implemented and practised successfully, provided that enough time, financial support, motivation, as well assome strong and effective language policy established by the experts related to language policy.
