Abstract

This paper examined Iranian women's social position and roles inthe late Qajar Dynasty. It also focused on the ConstitutionalRevolution and beginning of modernity in Iran. From the 19thcentury, Western male travelers and scholars, coming from anOrientalist perspective, began to describe Muslim women as “weakdolls” and “veiled members of a harem.” On the other hand, Persiansencountered Western culture and modernism. As a result, Persianwomen began to awake and recognize “self” through realizing “others.”Iranian women participated in social movements such as the tobaccoprotest of 1891-1892 in a public area for the first time and theysupported the Constitutional Revolution as a national movement. From the late Qajar Dynasty, modern education for women wasestablished, and women’s associations and female magazines startedcoming into existence. These movements became the triggers ofIranian women’s social movement. Through encountering modernity,Iranian women became members of a national struggle and wererecognized as a nation. In this paper, I consider modernity not onlyas westernization but also as the process of awakening nationalself-determination.
