Abstract
This study analyzes onomatopoeias in poems from elementary school Korean language textbooks used in South Korea, North Korea, and the Chinese Korean community, aiming to provide foundational data for Korean language education in a future reunified Korea and to reduce potential cultural conflicts. Poems from textbooks in the three regions were collected, onomatopoeias were extracted and statistically analyzed, and a morphological comparison was conducted, followed by a discussion of their educational implications. Unlike previous research, which mostly focused on a single region or South-North Korea comparisons, this study includes the Chinese Korean context, highlighting its originality. Findings indicate that South Korean textbooks employ diverse onomatopoeias, emphasizing learners’ emotional expression and cultural imagination. North Korean textbooks use repetitive “bondanmal” and vivid expressions, reflecting patterns of language use that incorporate collective ideology and emotional education. Chinese Korean textbooks, while influenced by North Korea, partially adopt Chinese phonosemantic features due to geographical and linguistic factors. By integrating morphological and socio-cultural characteristics across the three regions, this study offers foundational insights for developing unified Korean language textbooks and promoting cultural harmony.
