초록

From the establishment of Israel in 1948 to the Hamas-Israel war in October 2023, anti-Israel and anti-Semitic discourse has been deeply rooted among Saudi citizens. However, in response to the strategic threats posed by Iran’s regional hegemony and Islamist extremist activities, the Saudi government has discreetly sought cooperation to normalize relations with Israel. To secure public support and legitimacy for this cooperation with its historical adversary, the Saudi government has been attempting to shift the previously negative discourse on Jews and Israel into a more positive narrative. This discourse transformation was systematically promoted through school textbooks, mosque sermons, and media portrayals until the outbreak of the Hamas-Israel war in October 2023, which introduced competing narratives regarding the Palestinian cause. This study aims to analyze the process of Saudi Arabia’s shift in its discourse on Jews and Israel, shedding light on the political intentions and strategic tools that influence the formation and transformation of discourse. Rather than focusing on textual content analysis, this research emphasizes the processes of production, distribution, and consumption of discourse to capture its historical and political dimensions. Through this analysis, the study seeks to provide insights into the prospects of Saudi-Israeli normalization during the second term of the Trump administration.
