초록
The purpose of this paper is to explain the formulation of conditional relation in simple sentences, and to explore the correlation between the conditional relation and other grammatical categories like tense, modality, and mood. The conditional relation is usually expressed by combination of protasis (antecedents) and apodosis (consequence) in complex sentences. Conditional relation can also be expressed in simple sentences. The protasis having the meaning of event is implied in a part of a clause, and it could be expressed by a prepositional phrase or noun phrase. Semantically, conditionals are classified as indicative conditionals or subjunctive conditionals. And simple sentences can represent a wide range of modal meaning of unreality such as potential conditional, non-factual conditional, and counterfactual conditional. The interpretation of the conditionals depends on grammatical features of the predicate. The tense of the predicate plays an important role in indicating the scope of modality. The past tense with a subjunctive marker represents remoteness in time or in reality; it is used to express non-factuality or counter-factuality. So, the interpretation of conditionals depends on the whole context, including the meaning of protasis and the grammatical features of the predicate.
