This study surveyed about 1,300 university students and non-students living in metropolitan areas in Korea, China, and Japan. It examined the extent to which they could act freely in the space of other people without distinguishing between men and women. Consequently, the average percentage of respondents who answered, "I can act freely", is: Chinese (77.9%), Korean (60.2%), and Japanese (24.6%). The results show that Japan is a culture in which people must be polite even in when they are in a close relationship with others (親しき仲にも礼儀あり), while in Korea and China people have a strong sense of interpersonal consciousness so they can act without distinction in close relationships. The survey results confirm that people in a close relationship can be taken care of based on the norms of Chinese and Korean culture (親しき仲に迷惑あり).
