A Study on Research Trends in e-learning for English Education

초록

To fully understand the phenomenon of e-learning for English education in Korea, it is important to identify and map trends and patterns in research on the topic. This study does so by reviewing 105 articles published in 7 journals from 2002 to 2015. For the purpose of this study, content analysis was employed to analyse the articles in terms of research topics, research methodology, research participants, and target skill areas. The data analysis shows that there has been significant increase in research from both quantity and quality standpoints. As for research topics, instructional design, learner characteristics, distance teaching systems and institutions are dominant. Regarding research methodology, mixed and quantitative methods have been used more than 80%. With regard to research participants, university students were the most frequently used subjects. And as to target skill areas, listening, speaking, reading and writing are almost equally discussed in e-learning contexts. Implications and future directions are suggested.
