A Study on Chinese Interjections Based on Prototype Theory

The purpose of this study is to analyze the extent to which Chinese interjections exhibit the prototypical characteristics of interjections found in world languages. To achieve this, nine hypotheses were proposed and tested to determine whether Chinese interjections possess the prototypical features of interjections, a universal part of speech across languages. The verification process confirmed that Chinese interjections clearly display the prototypical features of universal interjections by satisfying most of the phonetic and morphological criteria. Chinese interjections are monosyllabic, contain vowel sounds, exhibit palatal approximations in word-initial consonants, include phonemes that fall outside the standard phoneme system, and show phoneme combinations that deviate from the phoneme system. Additionally, they demonstrate universality through marked vocalization. A notable characteristic of Chinese interjections is their association with lexical tones, with a relatively high occurrence of the first tone. Moreover, there is a discernible tendency linking tones to meanings, and they frequently exhibit the unique feature of reduplication. This study has yielded new research insights by examining Chinese interjections through a circular approach that considers both their universal and specific characteristics.
