초록

The study discusses how the orientation of a speaker, specifically in terms of personal pronouns and modal verbs, impacts the meaning of sentences. It distinguishes between first-person, second-person, and third-person orientations. Through the combination of personal pronouns and modal verbs in Chinese, it quantitatively analyzes changes in aspectual meaning. Key findings include: The speaker's perspective determines the relationship between the subject and aspectual verbs. Aspectual meaning reflects the speaker's subjectivity. The central meanings of utterances formed by these combinations are the "speaker's intention" and "speaker's request." Quantitative analysis shows that speaker-oriented expressions are most common, followed by listener-oriented and triadic-oriented expressions. The most frequently used aspectual verbs are '得' (děi), '要' (yào), and '可以' (kěyǐ) for speaker-oriented expressions, emphasizing the "speaker's intention" through ‘Dynamic modality’. '能' (néng), '會' (huì), and '應該' (yīnggāi) are used for listener-oriented expressions, imposing the "speaker's request" through ‘Deontic modality’. In summary, the speaker's orientation plays a crucial role in sentence meaning, with ‘Dynamic modality’ and ‘Deontic modality’ used to convey the speaker's intention and request, respectively, in Chinese sentences.

Abstract

The study discusses how the orientation of a speaker, specifically in terms of personal pronouns and modal verbs, impacts the meaning of sentences. It distinguishes between first-person, second-person, and third-person orientations.
