Abstract

This article focuses on the differences between History of Korean Literature and History of Korean Civilization by An Hwak and analyzes these problems on three aspects like their origin, change and development even if they are based on the same historical view. First, in the origin of Korean literature and Korean politics, two texts described that Korean literature and politics have uniqueness and universality. But in this case,Korean literature did not show modernity that Korean politics did. This difference reveals in the description of Dangun who is a founder of Ancient Korean dynasty. An Hwak regards him as an excellent man in the literature text and a normal one in the politics text. Second, in the change of Korean literature and Korean politics, two texts showed differences. History of literature admits the influence of foreign culture and welcomed Confucianism and Buddhism. But history of politics ignores the influence of Chinese political institutions and regards them unnecessary. Third, in the development of Korean literature and Korean politics, the two texts emphasized the spread of subjects who wrote the literature and participated in politics. But history of politics used a different way to reveal Korean originality comparing with history of literature. On describing the Joseon Dynasty period, History of Korean literature emphasized many Korean nationalities but History of Korean politics did the excellence of Korean political institutions as uniqueness.
