Abstract
This study reinterprets Jo Myeong-hui’s play Kim Yeong-il-ui Sa within the lived conditions of colonial Korean youth and examines how the composition of characters and spaces exposes the structural contradictions of the time. The play portrays the struggles of a Korean student, Kim Yeong-il, who faces poverty, despair, and the effort to preserve his human dignity while living in a foreign city. On the surface, it depicts the tragedy of a poor student, but beneath that lies the reality of an intellectual from the colony who finds it nearly impossible to affirm his own existence within the order of modernity. The characters Jeon Seok-won and Jang Seong-hee embody power through their imitation of Japanese imperial culture; their speech, attire, and manners mark their position at the center of authority. In contrast, Kim Yeong-il and his companions Lee Chun-hee and Park Dae-yeon remain at the margins of Japanese society. Their lodging room and the “Small Hill Forest” symbolize the spaces of exclusion inhabited by those pushed to the periphery. This contrast between figures and spaces visually reveals the relationship between empire and colony, center and periphery, while the dialogues, silences, and the scene of death vividly reflect the fragmented reality faced by colonial Korean youth.
