우리나라의 초등학교 음악교육은 학급담임교사에 의존하고 있다고 해도 과언이 아닐 정도로 담임교사의 비중은 거의 절대적이다. 그러나 현실적으로 비중이 큰 학급담임교사를 대상으로 하여 초등학교 음악교육의 문제를 심도 깊게 다루는 연구는 매우 부족한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 초등학교 학급담임교사에 초점을 두고 초등학교 음악교육을 담임교사에게 의존하는 데에는 문제가 없는지, 교육 일선에서 이들이 직면하는 환경적 제도적 어려움이나 문제점은 없는지, 또한 양성 프로그램에는 문제가 없는지 등을 조사 해 봄으로써 초등학교 음악교육의 문제점을 총체적으로 짚어보고 이에 대한 다양한 개선방안을 탐색해 보고자 하는데 그 목적이 있다. 본 연구에서 도출된 문제점과 개선 방안은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학급담임교사가 차지하는 큰 비중을 고려해 교육대학교 교육과정을 재조정할 필요가 있다. 둘째, 부교재 개발을 통해 학급담임교사가 지니는 한계를 보완할 수 있는 방안을 강구해야 한다. 셋째, 음악실 및 악기 구비 등 음악시설 및 장비에 관한 지침서를 개발하여 관계자들이 참고할 수 있도록 해야 한다. 넷째, 천박한 음악교육의 중요성에 대한 인식을 각계각층을 대상으로 새롭게 바꾸어야 한다. 결론적으로 이상과 같은 제언들은 음악교육 종사자들이 현재 우리나라 초등학교 음악교육이 안고 있는 갖가지 문제점을 함께 느끼고 그것을 개선하기 위해 앞장설 때만 가능하다고 생각된다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the current status of elementary music education, to investigate existing problems, and to explore alternatives for the improvement of the quality of elementary music education in Republic of Korea. For this study, the author examined the current curriculum of music education department in national universities of teacher education. Also the author analyzed survey results collected from 375 classroom teachers and examined current status of elementary music education. The following conclusions can be drawn from this study: First of all, more advanced and stronger additional training music program designed for pre-service classroom teachers should be implemented. Secondly, various music teaching resources for elementary school teachers should be developed and provided to help them to supplement their limitations in performance skills. Thirdly, guidelines for music facilities and equipment necessary for the development of a high-quality music education program in school should be developed. Finally, it is the most urgent to bring about changes in school administrators, ‘teachers’, and ‘parents’ attitudes toward the importance of music education in order to improve the quality of music education program in elementary schools.
