본 연구는 미국의 낭만 작곡가, 에드워드 맥도웰(Edward MacDowell, 1860-1908)의 피아노 듀엣 작품 《달 그림들, Op. 21》(Moon-Pictures, 1885)에 나타난 음악적 특징들을 관찰하여 문학의 영향을 받아 형성된 그만의 독창적인 음악 세계를 바람직하게 이해하려는데 그 목적이 있다. 서정시인이라고도 불리었던 맥도웰이 안데르센(Hans Christian Andersen, 1805-1875)의 어른들을 위한 동화, 『그림 없는 그림책』(Picture-Book Without Pictures, 1840)에 실린 다섯 편의 이야기를 기반으로 하여 완성한 《달 그림들》을 분석한 결과, 그는 안데르센 이야기에서 시간적으로 서술된 상황과 감정을 작품에 담아내기 위하여 그만의 이색적인 음악 요소들을 과감하게 사용하였음을 확인할 수 있었다. 예를 들어, 그는 단조영역의 선율에 장2도 소리로 부딪치는 전타음을 등장시켰다가 해결하는 방식을 자주 사용하여 구슬프거나 불가사의한 감정을 아름답게 구사하였다. 또한 특정 화음을 갑작스럽게 출현시키거나 동형진행을 통한 다양한 화음들을 반복 사용하면서 이야기 속 상황에 따른 음악적 분위기를 극적으로 전환시켰다. 때로는 독특한 박자 개념을 부여함으로써 이야기에 등장하는 공존할 수 없는 두 세계가 함께 공존하는 듯한 장면을 음악에 절묘하게 반영해내기도 하였다. 따라서 감동과 교훈적 여운이 깃든 안데르센 명작의 내면에 대한 이해가 선행될 때, 문학에서 전달되는 감정의 표현에 충실했던 맥도웰의 공상적인(imaginary) 음악 사상에 더욱 깊게 공감할 수 있겠다. 본 연구를 통하여 많은 이들이 맥도웰의 훌륭한 낭만 듀엣을 경험하여 작품에 어우러진 그만의 특별한 음악 언어에 대하여 음미할 기회를 가질 수 있기를 바란다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine musical features projected within the piano duet Moon-Pictures, Op. 21 (1885) by Edward MacDowell (1860-1908), an American composer prominent during the late Romantic period, and to identify how works of literature influenced characteristics of MacDowell’s musical creativity. Often referred to as a lyric poet, MacDowell’s piano duet is based on five stories from the classic Picture-Book without Pictures (1840) by a Danish author, Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875). By comparing the five pieces of Moon-Pictures with the stories of Picture-Book without Pictures, it can be observed that MacDowell applies many of his own unique musical ideas to express scenes and emotions that are narrated in Anderson’s stories. Understanding Andersen’s stories is important for both performers and listeners alike to comprehend MacDowell’s vivid imagination and musical thoughts in this work, which was very faithful to the expression of Anderson’s text. Hopefully, through this study, many people will have the opportunity to enjoy MacDowell’s wonderful piano duet, along with its unique musical language and the many creative ideas that it conveys.
