Abstract

In this paper, I have analyzed Schoenberg's Six Little Piano Pieces, op. 19, no. 6 in terms of a musical line in order to investigate the voice-leading system latent in atonal music. Prior to the analysis, I have closely examined Joseph Straus's voice-leading theory in which the offset number distinguishes efficiency of the voice leading among distinct set classes in set-class space and then proposed my own smooth voice-leading systems which make possible more efficient arrangement of pitch-class set space than Straus's. A close examination through this analytical approach has verified the organic integration inherent in the piece in various points of view. Especially, by the horizontal viewpoint focusing on a musical line, I could demonstrate the coherent voice-leading structure in multiple levels of structure and suggest a new interpretation.
