Abstract
In the early 20th century, Arnold Schoenberg pioneered radically new musical languages: atonality and twelve-tone music. Although he developed progressive musical language, Schoenberg believed that he was never conflicted with the German tradition but continued and extended it. The paradoxical insistence of Schoenberg is concerned with his art view. In this view, art is an expression of idea and the work of art is its realization. For Schoenberg the philosophy of the organic nature of an artwork and the conception of the Grundgestalt as concrete presentation of musical idea should not be changed in any type of music. It is the traditional paradigm that he learned from German masters. This paper will examine elements or characteristic features of the Grundgestalt, which function as an essence for the organic unity in a work. The idea of the wholeness produced by coherence and contrast or tension and relaxation is a very traditional view above all. In the analysis, Op. 6, No. 8 "Lockung" was chosen for the tonal music, Op. 15, No. 6 "Jedem Werke bin ich fürder tot" for the atonal music, and Op. 25 "Präludium" of the for the twelve-tone work.
