엇모리장단의 비균등 시간성: 타 문화권 비균등 리듬과의 비교고찰

이 글은 한국 전통음악의 엇모리장단을 중심으로 다양한 문화권의 음악에서 발견되는 비균등 시간성의 개념적, 수행적 측면을 살펴본다. 주로 판소리와 산조 등 민속악에서 연주되어온 엇모리장단은 동일하지 않은 선ㆍ 후행 5박자로 구성된 10박자 장단이나, 엇모리라는 명칭이 의미하듯이 절뚝이는 효과를 가진 4박자로 간주 되기도 한다. 이 글에서는 발칸반도와 아프리카 및 바스크 지역 등의 ‘악삭 리듬’, 벨러 버르토크(Béla Bartók, 1881-1945)의 ‘불가리안 리듬’, 올리비에 메시앙(Olivier Messiaen, 1908– 1992)의 ‘부가음가’와 비교하여 엇모리장단의 박절적 불규칙성과 비균등성을 5박자ㆍ10박자ㆍ4박자의 복합적 개념, 부가 리듬과 분할 리듬, 비등시적(非等時的) 시간성이라는 세 가지 관점에서 논의한다.
Abstract
This article deals with some conceptual and performative aspects of temporal asymmetry in different cultures, focusing on Eonmori Jangdan of Korean traditional music. Mostly performed in folk music, such as pansori and sanjo, Eonmori forms a 3+2+3+2 pattern at a fast tempo. Being a decuple meter consisting of two unequally divided quintuple subdivisions, it can also be perceived as a hobbling quadruple meter, as its name implies. This metrical irregularity is discussed in comparison with Aksak rhythm of the Balkans, the Basques, and Africa, and Bulgarian rhythm of Béla Bartók, and added value by Olivier Messiaen, focusing on the following topics: the complex notion of the quintupleㆍdecupleㆍquadruple meter, additive and divisive rhythm, and non-isochronous timing.
