Abstract
In the early twentieth century, European scholars began to investigate non-European music and found new rhythmic worlds with a different musical time from European music. They required a new rhythm theory to explain that strange rhythm, and then divisive and additive rhythm theory was presented by Curt Sachs (1881-1959). Sachs first showed a dichotomous rhythm theory, construing West European music as the divisive and Indian, Middle Eastern, East European music as the additive. Divisive rhythm, generally, refers to symmetrical rhythm by dividing into some integer unit and additive rhythm means asymmetrical rhythm by the connection of a series of irregular units. However, it is problematic if music in a certain cultural area can be explicated with a single fixed view. To unravel that matter, this paper examined a background of Sachs’ rhythm theory and revealed the problem and limit of it. According to the results of the study, Sachs developed the rhythm theory with an oppositive concept between division and addition, influenced by the style history of Western art by Heinrich Wölfflin (1864-1945) and the architectural rhythm theory by Paul Frankl (1878-1962). Sach’s theory, however, included a logical fallacy from the beginning. He defined rhythmic grouping of asymmetrical structure as the additive, but according to Frankl’s morphological principal, addition originally concerns a system where some other adjacent parts are added to a center. Sach’s additive rhythm, therefore, belongs morphologically to a divisive form and addition is, in principle, a different concept from asymmetrical division. Moreover, Sachs’ rhythm theory contains another serious problem. Sachs explained divisive and additive rhythm as complementary concepts in music, but in the Oriental part of the same book, he argued that Western rhythm is divisive and Oriental rhythm additive, which has made European musical world dichotomously separated from non-European. Thereafter, Sachs’ rhythm theory has been extensively embraced in the field of ethnomusicological rhythm study, and non-European musicologists have uncritically accepted such a dichotomous theory and internalized it as their own theory. Currently, however, Sachs’ theory is heavily criticized as a partial view with orientalism which interrupts fundamental understanding about non-European rhythmic system. Departing from mechanical rhythm theory which emphasizes only ethnic distinction, we should be able to paint a big picture that can interpret deep meanings of rhythm, music and time.
