Abstract
This paper examines jangdan in Korean traditional music as more than rhythmic units, interpreting them as a structural system rooted in Eastern philosophy, including Yin–Yang, the seasons, the 24 solar terms, and the Ten Heavenly Stems and Twelve Earthly Branches. Jangdan is understood as a musical framework that embodies the passage of time and reflects the cycles of nature and human life. The analysis focuses on six representative patterns—Jinyangjo, Jungmori, Jungjungmori, Gutgeori, Jajinmori, and Hwimori—and explores how their metric structures correspond to philosophical concepts. For instance, the twelve beats of Jungmori correspond to the twelve months and the Twelve Earthly Branches (Zi, Chou, In, Myo … Hai), while the twenty-four beats of Jinyangjo align with the twenty-four solar terms. Concepts such as Daesam-Sosam, paired jangdan, Saengsamek, and Gigyeong-gyeolhae illustrate how the balance of Yin and Yang shapes musical flow and structure. The study highlights jangdan as a cultural system embodying natural and philosophical order, offering new perspectives on Korean traditional music.
