This article focuses on two points. First, This article is concerned with investigating the usage of verb ʻmacho-ʼ in Middle Korean, also discussed syntactic and semantic properties of ʻmachoaʼ and its lexicalization. I examined that actually verb ʻmacho-ʼ is realized with ʻNP-i NP-eul NP-eul machoʼ, ʻNP-i NP-eul NPe machoʼ, ʻNP-i NP-eul NP-euro machoʼ and it used with various meanings. In addition, I discussed that adverb ʻmachoaʼ based on [verb ʻmacho-ʼ + conjoined endings ʻ-아ʼ] is lexicalized. The word formation process for these(verb + conjoined endings ʻ-아ʼ) is diachronic. but it is not productive. However, Adverb ʻmachoaʼ underwent a process of extension in meaning. It now can modify verbs and be interpreted in ʻjustʼ or ʻby chanceʼ. The meaning of ʻjustʼ or ʻby chanceʼ in adverb ʻmachoaʼ was extended in the meaning of verb ʻmacho-ʼ. As a result, ʻmachoaʼ was listed as one of adverbs.
